Announce : Raheem DeVaughn - . The Love & War MasterPeace

Announce

Review by Andy Kellman
Emboldened by Love Behind the Melody's crossover success, involving a Top Ten spot on the Billboard 200, a BET Award and two Grammy nominations, Raheem DeVaughn grants his third album a title that sounds (but does not necessarily look) arrogant. Despite the wordplay, DeVaughn did not mess around when it came to recording a set befitting a title as grand as The Love & War MasterPeace. There are plenty of love songs, naturally, and most of them are imaginative and excellent. Even when they slip into clever foolishness, as on “B.O.B.” — in which the protagonist testifies the many reasons why he would be preferable to a specific device — they are strong in construction, much more about honoring the woman than the man’s prowess, and DeVaughn’s easy falsetto never sounds self-satisfied. On the socially conscious material, DeVaughn really lays into it all with a dedicated force that is potent musically and lyrically. Subtract Dr. Cornel West's recurring spots as hype man-slash-mood enhancer, and the album would still remain one of the most grippingly conscious major-label R&B albums of the last 30 years, featuring the Curtis Mayfield-channeling (and sampling) “Bulletproof,” an alluringly morose opener, and the startling 13 minutes that make up the closers “Nobody Wins a War” (despite involving the input of nearly a dozen of DeVaughn’s contemporaries, it is no wreck) and “Revelations 2010” (assisted by Damian Marley and a chorus of “They’re out to bury me, they’re out to bury you/And all you can do is arm yourself”). An expanded version adds over 45 minutes to the program, making the album clock in at nearly two hours. DeVaughn stretches out on the meditative “Soldier Story,” inspired by a friend who returned from Iraq without legs, and “Lose Control,” an 11-minute robo-funk workout. Most of these songs — especially “Wing and a Prayer,” featuring UGK’s Bun B and a spine-tingling chorus — should not be considered merely bonus content.

Announce : Jaheim - Another Round

Announce

Truth in advertising, Another Round varies little from Jaheim’s earlier efforts, but for the returning listener, that’s the selling point. Right off the bat the fingersnapping funk of “Ain’t Leavin’ Without You” brings that husky brand of neo-soul that’s unique to the singer, who’s partnered here with a handful like-minded producers including the returning KayGee. With warm guitars, jazzy flutes, and early-'70s soul nostalgia, the following “Finding My Way Back” is a perfect example of how the singer nails those Vandross-sized moments of yearning. The silky smooth “Her” gets at the cool passion of the Isley’s, and Bill Withers even comes to mind on some of the more organic cuts, but with such obvious respect for the past, the argument against interpolating Percy Sledge’s classic “When a Man Loves a Woman” for the trite “Impossible” should have been obvious. Still, at 14 cuts the album still stands after some trimming, and when you add big fan Jadakiss on the “Ain’t Leavin’ Without You” remix, you’ve got all the elements Jaheim fans require.

Announce : Corinne Bailey Rae - The Sea

Announce

On February 1st, 2010, Good Groove/Virgin will release Corinne Bailey Rae’s new album, The Sea. The record was co-produced by Bailey Rae with Steve Brown, and Steve Chrisanthou, who produced many of the songs on her debut album, which has sold four million copies worldwide.

Bringing together a new band of musicians, Bailey Rae recorded the album mainly in Leeds and Manchester, England. Her voice, always an expressive and soulful instrument, resonates with a poignant and newfound depth on The Sea. Loss and grief are recurring themes yet a sense of beauty and wonder ultimately radiates from the album’s dark corners.

“There is something miraculous that pushes you along, makes you keep going, makes you carry on. It’s really about the mystery of that. In fact, the whole album is about that in a way; it’s about loss but it’s also about hope, about keeping going and trying to find that beauty,” Bailey Rae told the U.K.’s Observer Music Monthly, which hailed The Sea as “an extraordinarily intimate and impassioned album” in its recent cover story on her, which can be found at: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/oct/04/corinne-bailey-rae-interview
